HOW TO GARDEN IN A DRY CLIMATE
An e-book by Jonathan Ya’akobi
Arguably the most uniquely qualified expert on the web, offering advice to the home gardener in a dry climate!
FACT!
MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THEIR GARDEN. THIS IS A CRIME! YOU SHOULD BE TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH YOUR GARDEN!
NOW LET'S FACE ANOTHER FACT – IT'S NOT ALL THAT EASY TO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN IN A DRY CLIMATE, UNLESS YOU HAVE THE INFORMATION TO MAKE IT SO.
Dear home gardener in a dry climate,
Does living in a dry climate mean that your garden has to be dry and miserable?
OK. You want to save water, chuck out the poisons and look after the environment, but are worried it will mean a less beautiful garden – right? WRONG!
Your garden ought to be different from the great gardens you've seen or dreamed about in Ireland, Thailand or New England. We live and garden after all in a dry climate. But in its own way, it can be just as beautiful. It really can!
Allow me though at this stage to ask you a few questions.
- Are you disappointed with your garden?
- Did you spend a lot of time and/or money setting it up, and are dissatisfied with the results?
- Do you and your family use the garden?
- If so, how does it make you feel?
- Does being in your garden give you a sense of harmony, balance and quiet?
- When guests come do you entertain in the garden?
- Are you proud of your garden, or perhaps ashamed of it?
- Does it give you a sense of accomplishment?
- Do you catch yourself feeling jealous of neighbour's gardens?
- Do you LOVE your garden?

Designing your garden

My friend! The last question is so important I'm going to ask it again.
DO YOU LOVE YOUR GARDEN?
Because if you don't, you've got to realize you're missing out big time.
I'm not saying your garden has to be perfect. Your children probably aren't. Does that mean you don't absolutely love them? Jealousy, shame and frustration are horrible emotions which get us nowhere. But how about pride, joy, fulfillment and accomplishment? So in which direction is your garden taking you?
My name is Jonathan Ya'akobi. I've been a professional gardener in Israel - a very dry and thirsty country - for 23 years. I design and set up new gardens, or revamp run-down ones, and then maintain those gardens I've created.
My career has put me through all the emotions I've just mentioned. But by making mistakes and learning from them, I've been able to savour the thrill and satisfaction of seeing a composition take shape, a flower bed really work, and a magnificent tree showing what it can do. Your outdoor space known as "the garden", is therefore far more than the sum of its parts. It has unlimited potential to lift you and your loved ones to pride, joy, attainment and inner peace.
Yet horticulture is not a totally easy matter. There's technical knowledge and experience to acquire, a design sense to develop, and so much information and advice being tossed around, you can end up going crazy. What's more, in a dry climate, water is at a premium, and either there's not enough for the garden, or the authorities price it so high, that maintaining a garden often becomes prohibitively expensive. You may also feel morally obliged to use this precious resource as responsibly as possible, and to do your bit for the environment as well.
So here are a few more questions for you.
Do you have enough information to:
- Maintain a water conserving garden?
- Maintain your garden with the use of poisons reduced to a minimum or excluded altogether?
- Look after the health of the soil?
- Know if you're doing the right thing or not? (If you work in the garden yourself)
- Know what questions to ask? (If you hire a gardener)
- Sort out the correct advice from the nonsense?
- Look at the elements in your garden with the discerning eye of a designer?
TESTIMONIALS:
Dr Michael Avishai: Botanist and Former Scientific Director of the Jerusalem Botanical Garden
"I got to know Jonathan when he joined our professional team of horticultural curators around 1994. I was immediately impressed not only by his passion for gardening, but for his ability to manage the plant collections. I also remember well his insistence on aesthetic values. His promotion to head gardener was the natural progression, largely because of his ability to apply his knowledge to the nuts and bolts of creating beautiful plant compositions."
Richard Todd: Head Gardener Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire, England
"I was a working guest at the Jerusalem Botanical Garden in January 1996. I was very fortunate in that Jonathan Ya'akobi arranged the professional aspects of the visit, because at that time we were suffering in Eastern England from drought, and we were desperate for some hands on information about irrigation and water conservation. I'm really excited about his site, and am convinced that it and his book will be of immense value particularly to those living in a dry climate."
Ruth and Erez Mergi:
"Jonathan recently designed and set up our small family garden. His ability to find a simple yet exciting design solution really amazed us. Also he included a fabulous herb garden, which not only gives us great things to cook with, but looks absolutely wonderful too. His newsletter has got to be an absolute must for people like us who need gardening info from an expert with so much experience in our sort of climate."
Zel Lederman: Travel Agent
"I'm really thankful for having been referred to this particular gardening site. We have a small courtyard garden and the information in the book is absolutely spot on. I look forward every week to the regular newsletter, and enjoy the fresh approach to gardening. Good grief, Mr Ya'akobi even shares with us his own mistakes!"
"Highly recommended."
Gerald Segal: Financial consultant, Israel
"One of the best decisions we made as far as the home was concerned, was to hire Jonathan Ya'akobi to build our garden. The design is original, yet the garden is also used a lot by our children. Jonathan really understands his plants and has developed the garden with great sensitivity over the last 4 years. Anyone with a garden can only benefit from his knowledge and experience, so I really recommend you check out his newsletter and book."
